Quarterly Housing Focus - Communal Living to Individual
UP ON THE (GREEN) ROOF
What's unusual about Scottsdale, Arizona's Optima Camelview Village
is their use of green roof technology. Green roofs are a relatively new way to capture rainwater in a specially designed mat system under a soil layer for watering plants and allowing for evaporation. Evaporation of water in soil and plants results in a microclimatic cooling effect. The technology provides insulation that improves energy efficiency of buildings.
Another plus is that the roofs absorb less heat during daytime and lose heat quickly at night. Planted terraces and roofs on all levels offer private gardens to extend living area to the outside of the units, offering an innovative way to increase usable space for owners. Trees allow for natural shading. The vegetation on the green rooftops also absorbs external noise, while plants and vegetation re-oxygenate the air.
